Fuengirola is one of Costa del Sol’s most well-developed seaside towns, great if you’re visiting as a family with kids. Besides being blessed with a string of wide and sandy beaches along its 7km coastline, there’s a zoo, a waterpark and a mini amusement park around town for sharing some fun times with the little ones.
Fuengirola is situated between Malaga and Marbella, close to the town’s of Mijas and Benalmadena; it is one of the most popular tourist towns on the Costa del Sol, a great holiday choice for families and children with a fantastic offering of beach, facilities and activities.
Located on the Costa del Sol, Fuengirola is a city with a rich Andalusian flavour which offers an extensive stretch of coastline covered with magnificent beaches.
Possessing a long tourist tradition, this town in the province of Málaga has a wide range of services and infrastructure, which includes golf courses, riding centres, leisure parks, hotel complexes and restaurants, not forgetting a significant calendar of cultural events. Along with it, Fuengirola has managed to preserve a great many remains left behind by the peoples who inhabited the city in ancient times, such as the Roman baths and villa or the Arab castle of Sohail. Any one of its many restaurants and pavement cafés provides the opportunity to sample the local cuisine, whose star product is fish.
The first thing that comes to anyone’s mind when talking about tourism in Fuengirola is its beaches. And reasons are not lacking, rather, beaches! The Costa del Sol surrenders to the charms of Fuengirola, and vice versa.
Do you know that Fuengirola has 7 kilometers of coastline bathed by the Mediterranean? You will hallucinate with its beaches integrated into the urban case. All of them have a blue flag, as well as the Q for Spanish Tourist Quality! And the quality of its waters and sand is simply excellent. It is a must to visit its impressive Paseo Marítimo. So you can see that I am not lying to you, here are some reviews from people who have already done it:
“Always taken care of, perfect bike path, direct access to the beach and access to the sand for people in wheelchairs. It’s great!».
“It is dotted with restaurants, ice cream parlors and beach bars with skewers, of course! It must be several kilometers long and you go through different beaches, many of them with a blue flag ”.

It is one of the furthest from the center and its visitors are mainly young. Does one have to do with the other? It is 1,200 meters long and 40 meters wide. The sand is fine and dark, and the waters calm. It has showers, sports equipment and a children’s area. If you are one of those who thinks that every beach should have at least one beach bar, you should know that this one has six. You like it, right?
Los Boliches Beach – Las Gaviotas
There are actually four beaches that stretch for 3,000 meters: San Francisco, Boliches, Gaviotas and Torreblanca. Its average width is 60 meters, they are made of fine dark sand, and the waters are also calm. Apart from showers, easy access on foot and 14 beach bars, these beaches stand out because they have an area adapted for people with reduced mobility. Among its services, there are 10 special car parks, amphibious chairs, crutches, toilet modules and 2 lifeguards who attend to the bathroom. Interesting!
It is located in the center of the city and includes two beaches: Playa de Santa Amalia and Playa de Fuengirola. It has a length of 1,650 meters of fine golden sand, and an average width of 30 meters. It has a sports area, a children’s area and 9 beach bars. You may have noticed that the chiringuitos in Fuengirola is taken very seriously, right?
This beach is for lovers of ‘moragas’ in the typical Fuengirola boats. If you do not know what a moraga is, I will tell you that it is the typical night party on the beach. Yes Yes Yes! A great plan for those who like nightlife and partying, with good fish and good music. It is approximately 1 kilometer from the center of Fuengirola, but you can go by car or on foot. With so much moraga, it only has 2 beach bars.
Sohail Castle, the Fuengirola City Festival and the Medieval Market
tourism-in-fuengirola-castillo Another of the outstanding aspects of tourism in Fuengirola is its historical-artistic heritage. And as an emblem of this is the Sohail Castle. Located at the mouth of the Fuengirola River, this impressive construction stands on an isolated hill 38 meters above sea level. Punics, Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs have passed through there, until in 1485 the Castle was occupied by the Christian army.
In recent years, the Fuengirola City Council Workshop School has carried out different works aimed at converting Sohail Castle into a space for holding cultural events. One of them is the Medieval Market which is held in the months of August or September, depending on the edition. The hours are usually from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., and in addition to seeing medieval performances and buying handicrafts, you can also taste the typical gastronomy of the time. An ideal plan for young and old!
tourism-in-fuengirola-festival In Sohail Castle the City of Fuengirola Festival is also celebrated, which is one of the most relevant musical events on the Costa del Sol. This festival began to be held back in 1995, being today one of the one of the most emblematic, and in it you will be able to listen to the music of different cultures from all over the world. The other renowned festival in Fuengirola is the ‘Marenostrum Fuengirola’ which brings together more than 30 musical events from July to September. Are you going to miss it?
But these are not the only cultural events that take place in the beautiful town of Fuengirola. I also recommend that, when you have the opportunity, go to La Ruta de la Tapa Erotic or La Cazuela de la Abuela. Not to mention its multiple concerts, musicals, flamenco, dances or theatrical performances. Most of them take place in the Peace Palace. Fuengirola, it’s cool!
